Date Night Des Moines: coffee, books and Lent

date night des moines, getting coffee and reading books together

So I already missed one Date Night Des Moines post since I announced the new series last month. We were traveling one weekend, and then Adam was sick, and I had a few work things going know how it goes. But I'm back with the latest date, which is kind of a throwback to our college days. We found a cute little cafe we hadn't been to before, grabbed our books and spent an hour having our own little book club discussion. It's kind of fun to take a normal activity like this — one that could easily be done at one of our apartments — and get out of the house with it.

A little background: Adam and I decided that for Lent this year, we would read two chapters of this book every week and discuss them each Sunday after church to help us learn more about ourselves and each other. Both of us grew up Catholic, but we still have very different opinions on some concepts, and it's always interesting to listen to the other person's point of view. Since Lent is a time for reflection, we thought this would be a perfect activity for us to do together.

One thing Adam and I both really love about our relationship is our ability to talk comfortably about tough issues and keep an open mind about the other's opinions. We don't always agree, but then, what would be the fun in dating someone who thinks exactly the same way you do?

This date was simple to plan and only as expensive as our coffee and books, but we had a really great time and an interesting discussion. If you're both into reading, I definitely recommend this type of date — for any kind of book or reading material you choose. And I know it's easier (and oh so tempting!) to just stay in your pajamas and do this at home, but I really encourage you to go out and make an afternoon out of it — especially when the sun is shining like it was for us! Giving it a more formal setting makes it seem more important than just having a casual conversation on the couch. And it gives you both something to look forward to :)

What do you think of the couple's book club idea? Have you tried it? Would you? Leave your comments below!

P.S. The first Date Night Des Moines post.
